It’s not what you know, but who you know…
I’m sure just about every industry out there preaches the importance of networking and building connections…. surprise! I’m here to tell you the same.
Networking alone has given me the biggest advantage as it relates to gaining opportunities and ultimately having a seat at the table. Don’t get me wrong—your work should definitely stand on its own merits. However, if you let your work do all the talking, you risk overshadowing your individuality—the very thing that makes you memorable.
When people hear the word "networking," they often imagine it’s just about small talk and work-related conversations. While yes, that can be a part of it, I’ve learned you get the most out of networking when you have genuine conversations that allow you to really get to know the other person beyond the surface level.
As an introvert myself, trust me I know it’s not easy. However, the connections you build can significantly impact your career. When someone you've connected with moves to a new company, they might remember how personable you are and advocate for you to join a project. Similarly, if a new position opens up and a hiring manager seeks recommendations, your positive presence could be a key factor in their decision.
In short, don’t neglect your soft skills - they are just as important as the hard ones.
